Marketing Your Community

In order to improve local economies, cities will often try to attract one of two markets:

  • Visitors:  tourists, business visitors, shoppers
  • Business and industry:  corporate headquarters, heavy industry, “clean” industry, entrepreneurs

As a leader in your community, which of the above markets will you try to attract to Hoover?  Why?

  1. To improve on local economies, I would try to attract both small business owners and shoppers. I feel as if the two go hand-in-hand. If Hoover has a lot of small boutiques and shops that are one-of-a-kind, it will attract people from all around our area to come and find items that not many other people will have. There is value in having or wearing things that are different from everyone else. Personally, I love shopping for items nobody else and feeling confident in my finds. When I see someone else with the same thing, it almost feels like it’s not as special. I do a lot of my shopping outside of Hoover for this reason, I don’t want to be like everyone else, I’m sure other people have the same problem in other areas. When someone wants to go shopping where they know they will find something unique, it would be cool if they thought of Hoover.

  3. Which markets would attract to Hoover, some may ask. Hoover is full of small business entrepreneurs, shoppers, residential homes, and tourists! I think that bringing in some new small business entrepreneurs, to fill the store fronts that might be empty in shopping places, would be a great addition to Hoover. We are home to over 80,000 people, who also like to get out and shop too (2014)! Hoover has the Galleria mall, which is on the Top 25 Malls in America list, which includes over 200 stores, with 2.4 million square feet. Hoover also has an extremely low crime rate, taking only 15% of Birmingham’s crime rate (2014). If you’re not-so into malls that you have to go in, or you’d like to just drive by it, there still is Patton Creek! Patton creek it a little strip mall that is across the street. There are available store fronts here, and places to sit down and read, or go watch a movie. Overall, Hoover is a great place to invest into!

  4. I believe that we should try to attract more visitors because we already have a good amount of attractions that people enjoy and bringing more people to Hoover will help Hoover’s economy improve as a whole. Although we have a high population in Hoover, there are new construction projects to build more houses so people can move into a great area. Hoover is a crowded place, but we have a low crime rate compared to our fellow neighbors. Hoover’s crime rate is 15% of what the crime rate is in Birmingham so people will feel really safe when living here. The Hoover school system is one of Hoover’s biggest attractions because of how successful the students have been since leaving the two public high schools. In just 2013 alone, students from the two public high schools were offered up to 55 million dollars in scholarship money! Hoover has a mall called The Galleria that ranks in the top 50 of the largest malls in the nation! The Galleria has so many stores and we guarantee that you will find what you are looking for. Hoover also has many outdoor attractions as well! We have many outdoor trails and parks that it just makes life so much better. Our medical facilities continue to be ranked highly compared to other medical facilities in the nation. We take health very seriously in Hoover and Hoover works very hard to ensure a better life to its residents.

  5. As a leader in my community I want to try to attract more visitors in Hoover. Visitors include tourists, business visitors, and shoppers. Where there are visitors, there is money and the more money Hoover has, the more opportunities we have to make Hoover a better and cleaner place. Hoover has many attractions and shopping centers that visitors will want to come to or for; one main place to go is the Riverchase Galleria. The Galleria is the 43th largest shopping mall in the United States, which makes it a big attraction to tourists, business visitors, and mainly shoppers. The city of Hoover is home to the Hoover High School football team who holds 11 State Championships. Many big high school sports fans come to Hoover just to watch Hoover High School play, and while they are in hoover they spend money. The fans have to buy tickets to get into the game, but they can also spend money on food, merchandise, or just free shopping.

  7. As a leader in my community I would try to attract visitors (tourists, small business owners, shoppers) because I feel like they would attract the most money to Hoover as a whole. One of Hoover’s main attractions for tourists is the Riverchase Galleria which is the 43rd largest shopping mall in the United States. This displays a wide variety of stores open for tourists that are new to the city or just visiting. Another great attraction is the SEC Baseball Championship that is hosted annually at the Hoover Met. This brings in thousands of fans to Hoover which would bring in money as well, not only towards the Met but to the hotels they’re staying in too. The last main attraction is the school system as well as the sports program. Hoover City Schools is ranked 2nd in best school system in Alabama just behind Homewood. The sports program is just as big when it comes to Hoover. Hoover has won 40 state championships for 20 sports in the past 10 years, not to mention that it is the most watched high school in America.

  8. As a leader in my Hoover Community, and trying to improve our economies, I would lean more towards attracting tourists, and shoppers, and business visitors more than big industry works. Hoover is a very popular, crowded city with lots of visitors and tourists. People come to Hoover for their schools, or for the athletics, or for the venue of the city, or for the great stores all around it. The state tax rate is ranked 14th in the business friendly category, which is well above the national average. This means that the city of Hoover will have lots of shops and retail stores and that could make shoppers and business visitors more interested in shopping here. Hoover has one of the top 50 largest malls in the nation. It’s rolling in thousands of shoppers every day. The more people buy and spend money at Hoover stores, the better it helps out the economy. Getting back to our schools in Hoover, they offer programs that not many high schools can offer. They provide a wide learning opportunity which helps in making Hoover what it really is. Whenever tourist relate back to Hoover I want them to think about our schools and how awesome of an experience it was visiting.

  9. In Hoover to make more money for our city we have many activities to do for tourists. The Moss Rock preserve is a hidden forest within our community it offers a fun recreational hike for the whole family. Our city has many attractions; we could receive more money if instead we held out of state baseball games at the Met. Hoover may need new attractions other than the River chase Galleria, Hoover Met. Hoover could have a museum about high school football in the state and all of the championship records we have. If it rains in Hoover where do you go? Hoover Public Library offers great public reading and family fun. Hoover has many attractions but could use a few more. The Galleria is one of the largest in the country it is ranked 43rd.

  10. To improve our local economies, I think we should move towards tourist because Hoover is already crowded. We can’t have corporations come in and start building because we are limited to space. If we do have a business open, that’s going to bring in families. If those people move here, they will bring their kids and that just adds more to the overcrowding schools. If we have tourist, they’re going to use the hotels and the restaurants. In Hoover we have many one-of-a- kind stores. Those stores are already bringing in a lot of money. We already have the Galleria and it’s the in the top 50 largest malls in the U.S. The Galleria brings in thousands of shoppers every week and it has about 200 stores to shop at. Hoover is home to the Hoover High football team. Many people come to Hoover just to see them play.

  11. Being a leader in Hoover, I would attract visitors; especially shoppers which would help improve the economics of the community. There are many shopping centers and attraction spots around Hoover including one of the biggest malls in America. Inside there are hundreds of stores which make for an amazing shopping experience. I would also attract business visitors who are interested in finding jobs. There are plenty of possible fields to go in. Whether they have little to no experience there is a job for them. Hoover is a well-built, but small community so attracting more business and industries would over crowd Hoover even more. Overall Hoover makes for a great community that has something for everyone.

  12. As a leader in my community, I would try my hardest to attract visitors and shoppers. The economy of Hoover as a whole is most directly controlled by retail, so attracting more shoppers means more revenue flowing through our economy. Hoover is at the crossroads of two major interstates, 65 and 459, meaning that our businesses have easy access. We also have an abundant amount of shopping centers to offer. The Galleria, which is in the top 50 largest shopping malls in the nation, and Patton Creek combined, have over 250 store fronts! Not only is Hoover a great place to shop, we also have tons recreation attractions, such as Moss Rock Preserve, Skates 280, and Carmike Movie Theater. Hoover is booming with opportunity for shopping and recreation, and we are ready and waiting for all to come and visit our beautiful city!

  13. If I were a leader in our community, I would try to attract more residents to Hoover to address the problem of overcrowding in schools. Although this seems counterintuitive, I think that if we were to get more people to move to Hoover it would force the school board to address the problem of overcrowding, and hopefully build another high school to accommodate for all the extra people. It would be easier to fund the new school because of all the new people in Hoover who would be shopping and putting more money into the economy. Also, part of the extra sales tax goes to the schools, so that could also be used to help pay for the new school.
To attract people to live in Hoover, I would advertise our abundant recreational activities and low crime rate. If people with kids moved to Hoover, the new families would want various ways for their kids to spend their free time. Fortunately, Hoover has many recreational sites such as the Hoover Recreation Center, Hoover Country Club, Veterans Park, and more. In addition to wanting Hoover to have many recreational activities, new residents would want to move somewhere safe. Hoover would be perfect for them because it has a low crime rate. Of the crimes that are reported in Birmingham, only 15% of them take place in Hoover, making Hoover a safe place to live.

  14. Personally as leader in Hoover I would try to attract tourists, business visitors, shoppers and small business owners because it would build our economy and make us more prosperous. The tourists could make our city more well-known and talk about the great things to do in Hoover such as exploring the Moss Rock Preserve, attending professional baseball games at the Hoover Met and enjoying the relaxation of the Ross Bridge Golf Resort and Spa. I would also attract business visitors because of all the great businesses that we have in Hoover like, American Family Care, Regions Bank and State Farm Insurance. Shoppers would love the Galleria and shopping centers such as The Grove and Patton Creek which would really help boost our economy and schools. The Riverchase Galleria is consistently a top tourist destination with it being the one of the 25th largest shopping centers in the United States. Lastly, I would captivate small entrepreneurs to the city of Hoover because they could accommodate the few empty shopping spaces in Patton Creek and The Galleria. Hoover has so much to offer, with its growing community and award winning schools. You wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

  15. As a leader in my community, I would want to attract visitors into Hoover more than businesses and industries. Patton Creek and the Galleria mall are the main shopping areas in Hoover. I think that Hoover should expand the Galleria mall or put more stores into Patton creek. The Galleria mall is the 25th largest shopping regions in the nation, so I think that if Galleria could expand then it would be good for the Hoover economy and improve the rank. Patton Creek has a lot of restaurants, most of the restaurants end up shutting down because they aren’t doing so well. If Patton Creek could shut down the restaurants that aren’t making enough money and turn it into higher end stores or small boutiques then more people would consider going there. The Galleria mall also has lots of stores and they are always moving around to different locations for a bigger store. I think if they could relocate some of the smaller known stores and some of the stores who would like to expand their space to Patton Creek. Patton Creek does so well because that’s where they have Carmike Cinemas and Barnes and nobles and other stores doing well.

  16. If I was the leader of my community, I would try to attract more visitors to improve the local economy. I think it is good to have people stop in Hoover for a week and see what it is like. In order to do that we need to build something amazing. In my opinion I think we should build an amphitheater. An amphitheater is a great way to attract people out of the area to come see their favorite band preform. Also an amphitheater can be used for music festivals which people all around the country are attracted to. If we were to do this, we should build the center close Ross Bridge because of all of the space but also far away from residential area.

  17. As a leader in the city of Hoover, I would definitely try to attract visitors rather than business and industry. Because of the limited space the city of Hoover offers. If industries wanted to build their headquarters or manufacturing plants, there wouldn’t be enough space because the land available is limited and the city is crowded. With visitors like tourists, shoppers, and business visitors they’re only here for a limited amount of time and usually stay in hotels that boost our economy. Also with lots of shopping options in Hoover like The Galleria, which is one of the largest mall in the U.S with 200+ stores or The Patton Creek Shopping center they will be able to help our economy by spending money here and supporting our local businesses while doing it. Business visitors will also make a big impact on the local economy by investing money in our city, for example the purchase of commercial or residential real estate to rent out or sell. By purchasing homes locally more money stays in the community. Overall, Hoover offers many things that visitor’s want which makes it the perfect city for visitors.

  18. I would lean towards attracting the visitors. Hoover already has the ability to attract people nationally because of our advanced programs in our school system, from our education to athletics. The Riverchase Galleria mall is also one of Hoover’s main attractions. It is one of the top twenty-five biggest malls in the United States. That would be great for tourists who love to shop and walk around. Veterans Park is also an amazing attraction. It is a good place to relax or have fun during the events that are held there.

  19. As a leader in my community, I would attract visitors like tourists, business visitors, and shoppers in order to improve local economies. The reason for this being is because Hoover has so much to offer. We have a great school system, health care is amazing, and even the shopping centers are wonderful. Since our mall, the Galleria is one of the top twenty-five biggest mall in America, attracting visitors like shoppers is great because since they like/love to shop, it will be benefiting Hoover because the amount of products that they buy, we are receiving that money that will help our economy. Veterans Park in Hoover is a great place for tourists to visit because it’s a great place to hang out. The park has a 5K cross country trail, of course a playground for kids and teens to hang and play, and three beach volleyball courts.

  20. Prompt: In order to improve local economies, cities will often try to attract one of two markets:
    1. Visitors: tourists, business visitors, shoppers
    2. Business and Industry: corporate headquarters, heavy industry, “clean” industry, entrepreneurs

The city of Hoover is well suited to attract as many visitors, tourists, and shoppers as possible, as well as small business entrepreneurs. This market best fits Hoover’s existing infrastructure and economy because of the high number of retailers, broad range of entertainment, and family friendly atmosphere. More specifically, Hoover’s economy and population is rapidly increasing which creates more business opportunities and a higher circulation of monetary transactions which is extremely suitable for small business entrepreneurs. In support of this statement, the 2000 census states that the population of Hoover was 62,742 and has now increased to 84,126 as of 2013. Also, The Galleria Mall generates much of Hoover’s economy and attracts many visiting shoppers, being one of the top 25 regional shopping malls in the nation. Hoover is also a wonderful setting for business visitors because of the many dining options and wonderful lodging, especially in the Wynfrey Hotel containing a 32,000 sq. ft. meeting space, business center, and free airport shuttles.
